The mission of organization:
Formation of active democratically-oriented citizen through conduction of educational, informational, research and other activities for and with young people as well as persons and institutions working with young people
The main fields of activity of organization:
Civic education and participation program is aimed at up-bringing a new generation of democratically-minded Belarusians that participate actively in everyday life of their communities. The program is implemented by means of on-going long-term and short-term training courses, study circles, internships, roundtable discussions, and advocacy campaigns.
Law-related education program is aimed at building understanding within young people of basic legal concepts and developing practical skills and attitudes on how to handle and benefit from the laws and regulations in everyday life. The program is modeled on the US-based organization Street Law, Inc. approach to law-related education and is being implemented in formal and non-formal educational settings in Belarus (primarily at schools and legal clinics) since 2000.
Human rights education program is aimed at promotion of human rights framework in public and private discourse in Belarus. The program includes development of policy documents and teaching& learning tools as well as training activities for formal and non-formal spheres of education in Belarus. Since 2007 VIT Association is a partner of the Council of Europe Human Rights Education Youth Program in promotion and translation of a Compass: a Manual on Human Rights Education with Young People into Belarusian language.
University teaching and research support program is aimed at professional development of young scholars in humanities and is implemented by means of training programs and facilitation of corresponding discussions during gatherings (round tables, conferences) and via Internet. In 2003 VIT initiated establishment of an International Network of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Scholars.
VIT Association has a team of qualified trainers in all these fields. Materials and outcomes of the programs were published in more than 20 training manuals, recognized both nationally and internationally. Recently published Human Rights Education in the School Systems of Europe, Central Asia and North America: A Compendium of Good Practice (a joint publication of the OSCE, UNHCHR, UNESCO and Council of Europe) includes VIT’s Law in Everyday Life practice.
